Wednesday 18th March 2015 is National Child Sexual Exploitation Awareness Day which highlights the issues surrounding CSE, encouraging everyone to think, spot and speak out against this abuse. Their #HelpingHands campaign encourages people to write a personal pledge to say how they will help prevent CSE and give victims a voice.
Sexual exploitation of children and young people under 18 involves exploitative situations, contexts and relationships where young people (or a third person or persons) receive ‘something’ (e.g. food, accommodation, drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, affection, gifts, money) as a result of them performing, and/or another or others performing on them, sexual activities. Both girls and boys are at risk of sexual exploitation, and it is seriously harmful to children both emotionally and physically.
Child Sexual Exploitation is a priority concern to Brighton & Hove LSCB and our partner agencies, as our Independent Chairperson, Graham Bartlett, says:
“The LSCB is determined to work with all agencies and communities to ensure that the services provided to eradicate CSE are easy to access, joined up and effective. We know the damage these crimes do to young people so our approach to ensure we prevent those at risk falling victim, protect and support those already suffering, and prosecute those who abuse others in this way needs to be coordinated at all levels and it’s the LSCBs job to make sure that this happens. The programmes we have in place such as Red Op Kite are effective but we will never become complacent. We can always do more.”
At our full Board meeting in March we held a table discussion on the findings of a recent Multi Agency Audit on the response to CSE in our city. You can read a summary of the learning from this audit here, and we asked our Board members to make their own #HelpingHands pledges from this discussion:
“Share my growing knowledge of the risk factors of CSE”
“Challenge media / TV which normalise inappropriate age related relationships”
“ I will tweet that we all need to take responsibility for identifying / tackling CSE”
“Acknowledge that there is CSE in Brighton & Hove”
“Work with partners to improve the identification of boys & young men at risk in the city”
“Asking questions of the systems that exist”
“Raising issues of ‘risk’ with young people and their carers”
“To raise the awareness of CSE when opportunities arise both professionally and socially”
“To work with colleagues to improve accessibility to CAMHS for those who need mental health support”
“Support ‘ultra-commissioning’ ie get other related commissioning arrangements to incorporate outcomes which contribute to preventing / disrupting CSE”
“Support work to identify young male victims and actions to protect them”
“Contribute to actions which identify likely risk factors that could lead young people to become perpetrators and intervene”
“More raising awareness and sharing with schools”
“Promote healthy relationships”
“Ask questions of young people and professionals”
“Promote awareness raising within the hospital”
“Raise issues of consent”
