One of the country’s leading child safeguarding experts has been appointed as the new independent chair of Brighton & Hove Local Safeguarding Children’s Board.
Chris Robson has more than 30 years’ policing experience, including 10 years in safeguarding roles. He has worked as a practitioner, manager and strategic lead in some of London’s most challenging boroughs.
Chris’s career has included leading complex investigations into offences perpetrated against children and managing the Metropolitan Police’s child protection team in Haringey following the tragic death of Victoria Climbie.
He has taken a leading role in some of the most challenging investigations the police have faced in recent years, including the Stephen Lawrence Independent Review.
Recently Chris has worked as the Met’s strategic lead for the Specialist Crime Review Group with responsibility for Pan-London response to all statutory reviews, including Serious Case Reviews that directly shape the way we safeguard children and young people.
Chris Robson said:
“This appointment is a great honour and I’m very excited about it. I fully recognise the responsibility of such an important position, and safeguarding the children and young people of this fantastic city will always be my absolute priority.
I know that I will be working with like-minded people who are committed to providing the best possible opportunities for every child to be safe and have an opportunity to thrive.
I will support and challenge everyone involved, no matter how significant or peripheral their role, to deliver the best possible service for Brighton & Hove’s children and young people.
We must continue to embrace learning and develop a culture where we are never complacent and always striving to improve in our essential work. I want to develop our new early help arrangements, ensuring families and children are afforded the best possible assistance to prevent serious, long-term issues developing.
I will look to embed learning from local and national Serious Case Reviews and develop partnerships with all communities in a bid to counter emerging threats to our children’s safety. I will also seek to develop strategies to safeguard the city’s young people who are affected by mental health issues.
Brighton & Hove is recognised nationally as a fantastic place to live and I have been struck by the genuine warmth of the people I have had the pleasure of meeting since being appointed to my new role.
I am absolutely committed to ensuring that every child and young person is safe and well cared for. I am confident that, together with the excellent partners that are already contributing to the service we provide, we can continue to improve the way we safeguard the children and young people we serve.”
Former chair Graham Bartlett, led the LSCB for four-years, and will continue as independent chair of the Safeguarding Adults Board. Graham said: “I am delighted to be handing over to someone as talented and experienced as Chris Robson. He has a genuine passion for the city and for ensuring its children are kept safe. I have been privileged to have led such a committed partnership over the last four years and I know Chris will feel the same during his tenure.”
