Children & Young People Who Display Harmful Sexual Behaviours

Many expressions of sexual behaviour are part of healthy development and no cause for concern. However, when children or young people display sexual behaviour that increases their vulnerability or causes harm to someone else, adults have a responsibility to provide support and protection.

This introductory course to Harmful Sexual Behaviours is a mixture of presentation, discussion and practical exercise and will give staff the opportunity to extend their knowledge of evidence based work with children & young people.

Topics covered will include:

• The extent of Harmful Sexual Behaviour (HSB) displayed by children & young people
• To distinguish between ‘normal’ and harmful behaviours
• The reasons why some children & young people develop Harmful Sexual Behaviours
• Assessments – models and approaches
• Interventions – therapy, treatment and systemic issues

 

It is particularly appropriate for social workers, social work resource officers, community family workers, personal advisors, youth workers, foster carers, school nurses and teachers.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the workshop participants will:

• Understand the extent of Harmful Sexual Behaviours displayed by children & young people.
• Appreciate the continuum of sexual behaviours displayed by children & young people.
• Gain knowledge of why some children develop Harmful Sexual Behaviours
• Have an understanding of appropriate assessments and intervention
