The Learning Together to Safeguard the City fortnight is a new way of talking about how we all work together to keep people safe and well. It is delivered in partnership between the Safeguarding Adults Board, the Local Safeguarding Children Board and the Safe in the City Partnership Board, as well as Brighton & Hove City Council, other statutory partners including Sussex Police and Health, and a range of charities and community groups.
The Learning Together to Safeguard the City fortnight is first time that we have brought together work around Safeguarding Children, Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults, and the wider campaign around the 16 Days of Action against Domestic and Sexual Violence alongside other forms of Violence against Women and Girls. The aim is to reveal and debate some of the most important issues in our city which affect individuals, their families and the wider community, as well as exploring the responsibilities of professionals in their everyday work and their contribution in keeping people safe and well.
A series engaging and informative morning, afternoon and evening learning events will provide an opportunity to come together to considering safeguarding issues, with a particular focus on:
- Keeping the person at the centre
- Learning the lessons from practice, including those incidents where someone has been hurt or has died
- Working together more effectively
Events include
- Why do Young People choose not to access Mental Health services?
- Supporting Young Carers
- An Introduction to Modern Slavery
- Safe at Home: Domestic Abuse and the role of Housing Providers
- The Sussex Children’s SARC (Sexual Abuse Referral Centre) – how we can help
- LGBT* Domestic Abuse: Increasing Awareness and Understanding
Our finale event will take place on Thursday 10th December, from 2-5pm and will pull together the themes the Learning Together to Safeguard the City activities. It will be an opportunity for attendees to reflect on the themes, issues/barriers and areas of good practice that have been identified during the fortnight’s eclectic events.
This event What can the Safeguarding Boards teach one another? will be hosted by Graham Bartlett, the Chairperson of the Local Safeguarding Children Board and Safeguarding Adults Board, and will consider the ways in which the two boards can learn from, and influence, each other to help make Brighton & Hove a safer city to live in and be part of.
This is an opportunity for managers, frontline practitioners and professionals with an interest in developing and enhancing safeguarding to come together with senior managers and strategic leads and at the end of the event you will be able to:
- Describe the key issues for safeguarding in the city with adults, children and the violence against women and children agendas
- Explain some of the roles and agendas across safeguarding activity in the city
- Suggest ideas to enhance practice
