Working with Parents with a Learning Disability

Why is the LSCB providing this course?

This workshop will raise awareness of how multi-agency work can help address issues that may cause potential risk or harm to the children cared for by parents with a learning disability. It will look at best practice when working with these families and the local support available.

Target Audience:

All professionals in children’s and adult services that may undertake or be involved in the early intervention, or assessment of a family where the parent/carer has a learning disability.

Learning Outcomes:

• Helping you to identify when parents have a learning disability or needs. Gain a better understanding of what is a learning disability and what is a cognitive assessment.
• Explore the needs and challenges faced of parents with learning disabilities and their children.
• Good practice when working and communicating with parents who have a learning disability, including advocacy services.
• Strategies to increase parents ability to engage with professionals
• Referral pathways to specialist services that can support parents and their children.
• Working in Children in Need and Child Protection Context – what is PAMS?
